We will only accept one candidate per party and won’t defer nominations – ECZ

Electoral Commission of Zambia Chairperson Justice Irene Mambilima has advised political parties facing internal wrangles to resolve them as soon as possible as the Commission will not extend the date of nominations.
Justice Mambilima told a media briefing in Lusaka Wednesday morning that the Commission is concerned that some political parties are engulfed in leadership conflicts ahead of the January 20 by election.
Justice Mambilima said the Commission will stick to its nomination timetable which commences on December 17 2014.
‘I wish to take this opportunity to remind all political parties that in terms of the law, there are no independent candidates in a presidential by election, every candidate must be adopted or sponsored by a political party,’ she stated.
Justice Mambilima added, ‘No candidate can come and say am an independent candidate. Everybody must be adopted and or sponsored. A political party can only sponsor or adopt one candidate.’
She said, ‘In view of what has been happening out there which we have been informed by the Press, I wish to call on all political parties to put their houses in order and ensure that only one aspiring candidate per political party will represent that party in forthcoming presidential by election.’
Justice Mambilima continued, ‘Where there are issues to be resolved, we expect the political parties to resolve these issues before nominations, so my appeal is for those political parties that now seem to have two or more candidates like PF and MMD to resolve their issues before nominations because only one person can be a candidate.’
‘No candidate can come and say am an independent candidate. Everybody must be adopted and or sponsored. A political party can only sponsor or adopt one candidate.’
The ECZ Chairperson maintained that there will be no extension to the nomination time table on account of any political party not being ready.
‘Justice Mambilima noted, ‘these political parties have had enough time. According to the constitution, this election should be conducted within 90 days. The 90th day is the 26th day 2015, so we must conduct this election on or before. So everybody must be mindful of this programme.’
She advised that the Commission may only extend the nomination calendar if the number of candidates exceeds ten.
‘The Commission may extend the nomination period because of the time it takes to process a candidate and the 200 supporters, we can process only three per day.’
