Wina claims money for Mongu stadium was diverted

Vice President Inonge Wina has  told parliament that money that was allocated for construction of an ultra modern stadium in Mongu was diverted to other projects.
Responding to a question from Mongu Central Constituency UPND Member of Parliament Mwilola Imakando who asked for an update on the Mongu stadium, the Vice president said the money might have been diverted to other projects.
‘Unfortunately during that time there were a lot of wrangles between the contractor and government officials, unfortunately the project did not take off and in the process the funds that were allocated for the project might have been diverted for other projects, Wina said.
She further said she will investigate what might have happened to the money for the Mongu stadium project. The stadium was supposed to have been constructed at a cost of k 291 million kwacha.
In 2013, the then Provincial Minister (Western) Nathaniel Mubukwanu was asked a similar question on why construction of the stadium had not commenced and he responded that government had limited resources adding that the people of Western Province had to chose between a stadium or the Katunda/Lukulu road but to date, neither of the two projects has taken off.
The Maramba stadium in Livingstone was also budgeted for in 2012 but construction never took off. The explanation by government at that time was that money for the Livingstone stadium had been diverted to the Mongu stadium project.
