PF Secretary general Davies Chama says it’s “awkward” to say that Vice-President Inonge Wina is automatically the presidential running mate to President Edgar Lungu in next year’s general elections.
In an interview with the Post newspaper, Chama said President Lungu will have the bigger say on who the PF will field as the presidential running mate.
When asked, “Since on President, the PF unanimously agreed to endorse him as the sole presidential candidate, will it be the same with Vice-President Wina, as she is already in the position to continue”, Chama laughed and said the party still has time to decide.
“I think that is awkward. But we still have one year to go, so I cannot say. The party will make the decision,” he said.
“The President will have a big role to play over the running mate as far as I am concerned. I don’t want to speculate on that aspect now. I think it will not be acceptable for anyone to speculate on that score. We will leave that to the President and the party.”
Asked if Lunte MMD member of parliament Felix Mutati was being considered, Chama said:
“People want to imagine things which are not true, they want to imagine anything.
Those are just imaginations. Of course, people are speculating a number of options (laughs). You cannot run a country on speculation.”
