FDD president Edith Nawakwi has successfully filed in her nominations for the presidency.
Nawakwi, the candidate for FDD was escorted by the Non Government Coordination Council (NGOCC) and other women movements’ leaders to the Supreme court.
It is believed that these NGOs plan to go flat out to campaign for the only female candidate among 16 men that are set to compete.
Nawakwi, is a former finance minister under late Fredrick Chiluba. She has never run for president though she has been leading FDD from the time she took over from the late former vice president Christon Tembo.
In 2006, she gave way to UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema and in 2008 she supported incumbent president Rupiah Banda.
She has been under pressure to back one of the opposition leaders again but it seems the women movement has convinced her to contest.
Its is not clear yet whether Nawakwi’s party will field Parliamentary candidates in all the 150 constituencies or will concentrate mainly on the presidentcy.
