Zambezi Portland demolishes houses of Masaiti villagers

Zambezi Portland cement which is owned by some Italian business has demolished dozens of houses for villagers in Masaiti district of the Copperbelt.

The owners of Zambezi Portland have been allowed by government to displace Zambian villagers who have been staying on that land for a century.

Zambezi Portland Cement operations director Danielle Ventriglia on Sunday night effected the displacement by sending demolishers just after midnight.

One affected Zambian narrated the ordeal to Zambia Watchdog.

‘Finally our houses have been demolished by Zambezi Portland around 01:00 hrs. They came with weapons such as axes, pangas round bars, they forced themselves in the houses straight into the bedroom grabbing cellphones and anything that they found. One lady was dragged outside half naked leaving her baby inside the bed. One of the guy felt bad as a result he disclosed that they had been sent by Zambezi Portland . He was also beaten by the friends he came with. They came with a Fronten end loader.’
