South Africa’s Bafana Bafana will play 2012 Africa Cup of Nations finalists Zambia in a friendly international on January 11.
Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) sources have said that match is on, with Port Elizabeth being discussed as a possible venue.
The fixture will be part of a busy week for coach Pitso Mosimane’s side, with the team due to face India on January 7 and another Nations Cup-bound side, Ghana, on January 14, either side of the Chipolopolo clash.
South Africa’s failure to qualify for the Nations Cup has not only left local fans starved of football, but also opened a window of opportunity for Mosimane with no domestic action to be played between December 21 and February 15.
It gives him the chance to gather his local players with one eye on the 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifiers that begin in June next year.
Newly-returned Zambian coach Herve Renard will use the fixture to fine-tune his preparations for the Nations Cup, where Chipolopolo are pooled in Group A along with co-hosts Equatorial Guinea, Senegal and Libya.
Zambia have been South Africa’s most common opponents down the years, with 14 previous meetings between the two countries.
Both teams have won four games, with the six all drawn.
