Zambia National Service officers yesterday shot and killed a lone unidentified cyclist in Chililabombwe after being caught by a stray bullet as the officers were pursuing a suspected smuggler in a Toyota Corolla vehicle.
Copperbelt province commissioner of police Charity Katanga who confirmed the incident said that officers had earlier shot in the air but the driver of the corolla continued to flee heading towards some porous spot along the border with Congo DR.
Due to high cost of living and unemployment, most people in Chililabombwe have resorted to smuggling of essential goods into the neighbouring country as way of earning a living.
And some traders in the district have blamed the officers of being overzealous and abusive to residents in the town. they said the shooting was unnecessary as it happened where there were many people.
In 2013, two people were gruesomely shot dead in Kampasa area near Chongwe by Zambia National service officers during a land brawl.
