Zambia Railways Train derailment leaves 450 passengers stranded

Over 450 passengers have been left stranded after their south bound Zambezi express train derailed, throwing coaches off the rail but no injuries have been registered though there has been extensive damage to some coaches.

The accident occurred near Emmanuel school around 08:00hrs this morning but up to now there has been no concern from Zambia Railways officials who have even failed to provide them with any foodstuff. Central province commissioner of Police Lombe Kamukoshi and company officials have confirmed.

And a Zambia Railways source has disclosed to the Zambian watchdog that the train derailed due to the instability of the railway line which he attributed to poor workmanship and lack of quality control measures.

After the government acquired the USD750m Eurobond, USD120m was pumped into Zambia Railways for infrastructure improvement and replenishment of some coaches but instead the government started awarding railway rehabilitation contracts to PF cadres without equipment and ended up using hoes and shovels to do the works.

Worse still management at the Railway company was victimised and diverted money to the funding of President Edgar Lungu’s 2015 Presidential campaigns. The Zambia Railways board is headed by PF secretary general Davies Chama and recently appointed a PF cadre Christopher Musonda to the position of Managing director replacing Professor Muyenga Atanga who was fired for being married to Lungu’s perceived political enemy and former PF deputy secretary general in the Sata reign Bridget Atanga.
