Zambian arrested in Botswana for trafficking in children

A 20-year-old Zambian man has been arrested in Botswana on charges of human trafficking of three children and sexually molesting one of the kids.

Kelvi Thela Banda appeared in court in Botswana last Friday where he was denied bail.

Banda was arrested on June 7, in Pitsane village for allegedly promoting the trafficking of a 15­ year old girl and an 18­year old boy, both of Zambian nationality, to South Africa.

On count two, Banda was intercepted allegedly attempting to exploit, harbour and traffic from Zambia to South Africa, another girl of 14 years. The 14-year-old was allegedly sexually assaulted in the process but the police have not yet opened a case of sexual exploitation against the accused as their investigations into the matter are still at early stage

Banda was arraigned before court on June 9, where his plea was reserved. The state representative on the matter, Inspector Lesokolola of Ramatlabama police station, asked the court to remand the accused person in custody pending investigations. The three children, who are said to have no form of identification and travelling documents have been taken to a safe facility while Banda has been remanded in custody. The matter will appear for mention again on July 24.
