NAU’s Veronica Pohl and Jordan Chipangama were named Big Sky Conference cross country athletes of the week Tuesday.
The two clinched the conference honor after solid individual performances this past weekend at the Indiana State Pre-Nationals Invitational in Terra Haute, Ind.
Chipangama, a junior, scored a third-place finish in the men’s Blue race. The Zambia native ran the 8,000-meter course in 23:47, three seconds off his season-best mark that he set at the Cowboy Jamboree earlier this month. His performance helped the fifth-ranked mens team capture third place behind No. 2 Oregon and No. 6 Alabama. This is the second time this season that Chipangama has garnered the award.
Pohl, a senior, collected her third athlete of the week honor after finishing 16th overall in the women’s White race at Pre-Nationals. In the 6,000-meter event, Pohl finished with a time of 21:03. She helped lead the women’s team to a 14th-place finish in the power-packed field.
The Lumberjacks return to action on Oct. 31 in Greeley, Colo., as they look to defend their Big Sky titles for the third-consecutive season.
