Due to the freefalling Kwacha against the dollar and other major currencies, Zambia is expected to see the queuing for food stuffs which was witnessed way back in UNIP days coming back.
This time it is not about queues due to shortages as was the KK days but rather because of the high price for essentials. Our roving reporter captured this scene at Kabwe’s Simba Milling sales depot along Freedom way and opposite the high court, where people queued for mealie meal which is costing K72.
Elsewhere within the same town the commodity is fetching between K75 and K82. Simba Milling could offer lower prices because they are also involved in agriculture, but other millers who depend on maize bought from somewhere else will just have to push the price upwards.
