Football Association of Zambia ( FAZ ) Communications Manager Erick Mwanza says the 2-1 loss by the Chipolopolo Boys to Ethiopia in the CECAFA senior Tuskers cup yesterday was disappointing and uncalled for.
ZANIS Sports reports Mwanza saying during a ;press briefing, Wednesday, that FAZ and the entire nation was expecting nothing but an outright victory from the Chipolopolo (Copper Bullets) over the Ethiopians especially after recording an emphatic 6-0 win against Somalia last week.
Mwanza said the results were not impressive adding that it was too early for the Zambian national football team to be kicked out of the tournament.
“ This a lesson to the players who were went for the tournament for the first time, “Mwanza noted.
The Chipolopolo boys are expected to return home this afternoon aboard a Zambezi Airlines.
Mwanza noted that this a lesson to the players who were went for the tournament for the first time.
The Chipolopolo boys were eliminated from tournament after failing to overcome Ethiopia’s 2-1 lead at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
Even a second half strike by Felix Sunzu couldn’t propel Dario Bonetti’s men to the last four as first half goals by the East Africans proved too much for the Zambian developmental team.
Zambia dominated Ball possession for long spells but were a bit blunt in hitting the foe’s net.
The Zambians suffered a set-back as midfielder Thomas Nyirenda was sent off towards the close of the first half.
Yesterday’s defeat is the second in the role for the Zambian lads to have not qualified beyond the quarter-finals stage as the team when under the tutelage of French man Herve Renard was kicked out by Uganda through spot kicks.
Only Patrick Phiri, now coach for the Simba F.C of Tanzania, is the only local coach to have tutored the chipolopolos boys to the finals and scoop the CECAFA cup.
