Zanaco and Zesco United scraped into the 2015 Barclays Cup semi-finals after they won their respective matches against Lumwana Radiants and Kabwe Warriors on Sunday, joining Nkwazi and Green Buffaloes who progressed on Saturday.
Zanaco defeated Division One side Lumwana Radiants 3 – 0 having broken the deadlock in the 15th minute from Fackson Kapumbu’s free kick at the top of the area before they increased their advantage in the second half thanks to a 46th minute header from Ziyo Tembo.
Kapumbu was also involved in the third when his 59th minute delivery from a corner was headed home by George Chilufya.
Defending champions Zesco United edged Kabwe Warriors 2 – 0 thanks to goals from Mwape Mwelwa and Jackson Mwanza.
Mwelwa punished Kabwe Warriors on 13 minutes with a lobbed a effort into an empty net, goalkeeper Lawrence Mulenga guilty of a poor clearance after he had ventured outside the area only to head the ball into Mwelwa’s path.
Zesco United increased their advantage four minutes later when Jackson Mwanza fired home from inside the box after Mulenga failed to handle the ball under pressure from Mwelwa.
Zesco United’s victory means they will play Green Buffaloes while Zanaco will play Nkwazi on October 17 at a yet to be named venue
Green Buffaloes and Nkwazi booked their places on Saturday meaning that the semi final will feature three teams from Lusaka who have not previously won the Barclays Cup.
Green Buffaloes and Zanaco were losing finalists in 2009 and 2010 having lost to Power Dynamos and Zesco United respectively.
Nkwazi will be playing in the semi final for the first time while record winners Zesco United will be aiming to win the cup for the fifth time.
Since its inception in 2007 only Zesco United (4), Power Dynamos (2), Napsa Stars (1) and Red Arrows (1) have won the Barclays Cup.
