ZAWA director fired

Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) Director General Zen Vlahakis has been fired with immediate effect. Vlahakis has been dismissed for alleged Abuse of Authority of Office by paying himself gratuity before his contract expired.

This follows the Zambian Watchdog revelations last week that Mr. Vlahakis had paid himself gratuity when several former ZAWA employees have not been paid their terminal benefits.

A senior Ministry of Tourism and Arts Official who declined to be named confirmed the dismissal of Mr. Vlahakis in Lusaka Tuesday April 22,2014.

“Yes the ZAWA Director General has been fired. Just as you reported last week the Director General paid himself gratuity when some former employees are suffering,” the source said.

The source said apart from paying himself gratuity, Vlahakis also fired employees whom he suspected released information against former Tourism Minister Sylvia Masebo without laid down procedure.

Vlahakis was single sourced by Masebo and replaced Edwin Matokwane who has since won the case in the Industrial Relations Court for unlawful dismissal.

Last week the new Tourism Minister Jean Kapata dissolved the ZAWA that was also appointed by Sylvia Masebo.
