ZCTU questions govt for firing Sesheke senior cops

The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions-ZCTU- has demanded that government gives reasons for the dismissal of police officers that helped restore law and order during the violence that characterized the recently held sesheke parliamentary by-election.

ZCTU president Chishimba Nkole tells Phoenix News in an interview that government should explain clearly to the public exactly how investigations were carried out to warrant such disciplinary action against the officers.

Mr. Nkole is concerned that the officers were dismissed without a proper hearing or being given a chance to exculpate themselves.

Four police officers from sesheke district namely Shapa Wakunguma, Felming Chilongo, Boniface Lengwe and Fredrick Mukela were fired by President Edgar Lungu In ‘national interest’  through the police service commission without proper explanation.

However, Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo says he will give a comprehensive statement in parliament this week on the matter.
