Zesco United beats Egyptian team Al Ahly

Zesco United marked their return to the Caf Champions’ League group stage after seven years with a 3-2 victory over Al Ahly in a thrilling encounter at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Saturday.
The victory took Lwandamina’s side to the top of Group A along with Wydad Casablanca who defeated Asec Mimosas 1-0 in Abidjan.
John Ching’andu opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a low effort from outside the area but the lead was short-lived as Ghanaian striker John Antwi equalised three minutes later.
Clatous Chama restored Zesco United’s advantage four minutes after the break after he was set up by Ching’andu following a corner.
Chama’s excellence was evident once again when he scored his second goal of the match in the 55th minute, receiving rapturous applause from the fans in the process.
But the visitors pulled one back through Antwi, the Ghanaian bagging his brace with 23 minutes of regulation time left.
Lwandamina said it was important to start with victory against very good opposition.
“It is always good to start with a positive result. It was a very difficult match. It is never easy playing against a team of Al Ahly’s calibre. My boys fought and of course they managed to come up with a victory. It is a good start,” said Lwandamina.
And Al Ahly head coach Martin Jol said his players gave a good account of themselves till the final whistle and partly put the blame on injuries to some of his players prior to facing Zesco United.
“We expected a good team because we heard that they have never lost at home against foreign teams so it is a very good team.
“But of course we looked a little bit unbalanced; we were still looking for our balance after we had a few injuries we had and we had a very good team.
“They were very energetic, they were sharp, motivated and inspired and the only thing I can say is that I am proud of my boys because in the second half they came back in it to fight and they fought, but of course it was not enough to get back into the game and to score the third goal. But even at 3-2 they looked dangerous and quite handful.”
Action returns in a fortnight when Zesco United travel to Casablanca in Morocco to face Wydad Casablanca while Al Ahly will be at home to Asec Mimosa.
