League champions Zesco United remained on course of defending the title they won last season after they defeated Konkola Blades 1 – 0 in a week 22 match played at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Sunday.
Kenyan defender David Owino popped up to head home a free kick driven into the area by Justin Zulu following a foul on Mwape Mwelwa by Godfrey Chibanga.
The victory meant that Zesco United moved to 52 points and maintained a seven point lead from second placed Power Dynamos.
Zesco United were the last team to successfully defend the title when they won the league back to back in 2007 and 2008 emulating what Zanaco did in 2006 and 2007 seasons.
Man of the match Owino told fazfootball.com in a post match interview that the victory was vital because it kept his team on course to defending the title.
“As you know, we are chasing the league so we want to win against any team that comes here (Mwanawasa Stadium). This was a tough game but we should our superiority by taking our chances,” Owino said.
Zesco United travel to Nkwazi for their next assignment. Nkwazi is only one of the two sides to have defeated the Ndola-based outfit this season, the other being Forest Rangers.
Konkola Blades will be at home to Green Eagles.
In the earlier match played at the same venue Mufulira Wanderers defeated Forest Rangers 2 – 0 to move into fourth position with 35 points supplanting Green Buffaloes into fifth.
Eric Chibuye opened the scoring in the 15th minute when he headed home a cross from Mike Katiba.
The second goal came in the 85th minute when substitute Fumbani Muwowo who had replaced Katiba on the hour mark combined with Chibuye before putting the ball beyond Makasa Mufwaya in goal for Forest Rangers.
Mufulira Wanderers’ next match is against Zanaco at Kafubu Stadium in Luanshya while Forest Rangers will be away to Nkana.
